The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert Scalia (ASN: US-52034643), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 October 1951 in the vicinity of Samtae-dong, Korea. On that date Private Scalia was leading a squad in an attack on an enemy-held hill. During the course of this action heavy fire from a hostile machine gun position hindered the progress of his unit. Private Scalia, realizing the seriousness of the situation and with complete disregard for his personal safety, single-handedly assaulted the weapon’s emplacement. Although wounded during this daring attack, he successfully destroyed the weapon and killed its crew with hand grenades. As a result of his courageous action, friendly elements were able to accomplish their mission with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Scalia on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
