The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Jack R. Scalf (ASN: RA-15197812), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 11 February 1951, near Sansong-ni, Korea, Corporal Scalf was a medical aid man assigned to Company B when it was attacked by an undetermined number of enemy. The murderous fire that ripped into the platoon position forced it to withdraw to more tenable positions. Corporal Scalf, observing that two wounded soldiers had been left behind, ran across open ground despite the intense enemy fire that was raking the area about the wounded men, in order to administer first aid. He successfully carried one of the wounded to safety while under heavy fire. He continued throughout the attack to expose himself fearlessly in order to reach and succor the wounded. Corporal Scalf’s gallantry, courage, and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
