The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harry W. Sammons (ASN: 29541883), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 15 March 1944. Private First Class Sammons displayed resourcefulness and courage in repeatedly exposing himself while helping kill numerous Japanese who had penetrated our lines. When an enemy group closed in on a pillbox used by his platoon officer as a command post, Private First Class Sammons killed a Japanese soldier who was preparing to destroy the strongpoint with a grenade. This action alerted other friendly troops who opened fire and drove back the attacking forces. Later, Private First Class Sammons destroyed an enemy-held pillbox. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Sammons, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
