The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Louis Sambuco (ASN: NG-21011150), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On this date Sergeant Sambuco led elements of his unit in an attack on heavily fortified enemy emplacements. Despite the intense hostile fire he fearlessly led his men through a mined area. Approaching the enemy bunkers, he assaulted them with hand grenades to disrupt them and descended into the emplacements to capture the remaining enemy. Later, when fire from an enemy machine gun wounded a comrade, Sergeant Sambuco, from an exposed position, commenced firing upon the enemy, drawing his fire away from the fallen man and enabling litter bearers to evacuate him. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Sambuco on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
