Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 665 (November 2, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Andrew R. Sullivan (ASN: RA-16341926), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 31 August 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date, during an attack on a well-fortified enemy-held hill, Company C met heavy resistance from a numerically superior enemy force. A sudden burst of hostile mortar fire created confusion among the unit, enabling an enemy machine gunner to inflict numerous friendly casualties. Corporal Sullivan, a squad leader, although seriously wounded, carried a 57-mm. recoilless rifle to a position completely exposed to enemy observation and employed an effective base of fire upon the hostile bunker, successfully destroying it. Returning to his unit, Corporal Sullivan refused evacuation until he had reorganized his squad. As a result of his courageous actions, friendly units were able to advance with a minimum of casualties and successfully accomplish their mission. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Sullivan on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
