Headquarters, Fifth U.S. Army, General Orders No. 4 (January 6, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Sergeant Jay I. Sacquety (ASN: 39838732), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, on 10 September 1944, near Florence, Italy. Inadvertently entering a mine field, a civilian stepped on a German Schu mine which wounded him severely. During the delay in waiting for a mine detection to clear a path through the area, it became apparent to those present that immediate medical attention was necessary to save the life of the stricken man. First Sergeant Sacquety carefully made his way into the area infested with mines and booby-trapped grenades, lifted the wounded man to his shoulders and carried him to safety. The courage of First Sergeant Sacquety was responsible for saving a life, and his performance reflects the high traditions of the Armed Forces.
