The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Donald W. Sackett (ASN: US-51054552), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandae-ri, Korea. On that date Company C had the mission of attacking and securing a heavily fortified enemy-held hill. As Sergeant Sackett’s platoon advanced in the assault it was pinned down by intense hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire. Sergeant Sackett, realizing the precarious position of his unit and with complete disregard for his own safety, immediately exposed himself and advanced to the ridge line inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. Continuing in this valiant manner he advanced toward the objective causing much confusion among the hostile soldiers before he fell wounded by the enemy fire. His comrades, inspired by his courageous actions, continued their advance and successfully completed their mission. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Sackett on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
