Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 124 (May 7, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Edwin W. Ryan (ASN: RA-12119755), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 November 1950, near Majon-ni, Korea, Corporal Ryan, an aidman attached to Company A, 1st Battalion, was with a task force that was ambushed by a numerically superior enemy force. In the ensuing fire fight the deadly enemy fire from machine guns and other automatic weapons caused many casualties among the friendly forces. Corporal Ryan with complete disregard for his personal safety, continuously moved among the wounded giving them what medical aid he could. Exposed to heavy enemy machine gun fire he moved from one wounded to another to apply bandages and give shots of morphine. He personally assisted at least ten wounded to a truck for their evacuation, and promptly returned to assist other wounded. Working incessantly, he quickly expended all his medical supplies. Using empty bandoleers and his own clothing he continued to bandage the wounded. His actions were an inspiration to men in the platoon and resulted in saving many lives. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Ryan reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
