(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Kenneth Edward Ruddy, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Platoon Leader in Company D, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea on 21 August 1950. Captain Ruddy was in command of a patrol near Singi, Korea. An enemy force, after indicating that it wanted to surrender, suddenly opened fire, and First Lieutenant Ruddy directed effective counterfire and led the patrol back to safety. Learning that a soldier from another unit was missing in the area, First Lieutenant Ruddy returned by jeep to the scene of the engagement in an unsuccessful effort to find the missing man. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Ruddy, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
