    Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 147 (May 17, 1951), Amended by G.O. 258 (1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Grant Rowe (ASN: RA-6958533), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. While defending Hill 270, Korea, Company B, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry, was attacked by a large enemy force during the early morning hours of 29 January 1951. The moon had not yet risen when the attack started and the visibility being extremely limited, Sergeant Rowe, a member of a forward artillery observation team, accompanied another non-commissioned officer to the command post to call in a fire mission. While his companion was trying to establish radio contact with the artillery, Sergeant Rowe attempted to go to the assistance of a friendly mortar squad but was wounded in the wrist by mortar fragments which rendered his left arm completely useless. Almost simultaneously the friendly troops began to withdraw in the darkness and confusion of the battle and Sergeant Rowe, although painfully wounded and able to use only his pistol, unhesitatingly ran up the hill, and, with no regard for his own personal safety, successfully rallied the friendly troops. Sergeant Rowe’s gallant actions prevented an enemy penetration of the defensive perimeter and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
