The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William B. Robertson (ASN: 0-2003618), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the morning of 16 November 1952, Company L, 3d Battalion, of which Lieutenant Robertson was a platoon leader, was assigned the mission of assaulting and holding enemy positions on “Jackson Heights”, in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. Upon reaching the objective, they were subjected to intense hostile mortar, artillery and small arms fire. Lieutenant Robertson was constantly in front of the friendly rifle platoons, encouraging and directing the attack. During the course of this action, he was seriously wounded and rendered almost immobile. While being evacuated, and seeing that his platoon was becoming disorganized, he refused further evacuation and, disregarding his intense pains, vigorously continued to direct the assault from his litter. Only after his men were reorganized and in position to deliver effective fire, did he reluctantly submit to his evacuation. As a result of Lieutenant Robertson’s action, his platoon was prevented from becoming disorganized, which resulted in thirty of the enemy being killed. Lieutenant Robertson’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
