The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Robert O. Roberts (ASN: ER-37720670), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 10 March 1951, in the vicinity of Kapch’on-ni, Korea. On that date he was a member of a rifle platoon which had the mission of destroying an enemy observation post. As the platoon approached its objective, it was subjected to intense enemy mortar, automatic weapons, and small arms fire from well-entrenched enemy positions, which pinned the platoon down. Although wounded during this action, Corporal Roberts, with utter disregard for his personal safety, advanced alone, firing his automatic rifle from the hip and throwing hand grenades, which inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy and routed the remainder. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Roberts reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
