The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Duane C. Reinhart (ASN: US-55037731), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action 2 September 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date Company C was attacking a well fortified enemy-held hill. Due to intense enemy grenade fire, the lead squad was forced to withdraw. As lead scout, Private Reinhart, with complete disregard for his own safety, took an exposed position and laid down a covering fire. His accurate fire kept the enemy down on the reverse slope, cutting off their observation of the withdrawing troops. He remained in his position until the entire unit had reached safety. In an attempt to withdraw, Private Reinhart was mortally wounded by an enemy grenade. The gallantry in action and unselfish devotion to duty and comrades demonstrated by Private Reinhart reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
