The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Karl W. Pyle (ASN: RA-45014379), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Headquarters Battery, 39th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 28 November 1950, Sergeant Pyle was a member of an artillery liaison team attached to an infantry battalion attacking enemy positions near Majon-ni, Korea. Due to the rugged terrain, it was discovered that radio communications with the artillery forward observer were impossible without an intermediate relay station. Sergeant Pyle, voluntarily and disregarding his own safety, moved into an exposed position and while being fired upon by enemy snipers relayed fire commands for six hours. The timely and destructive artillery fire delivered as a result of Sergeant Pyle’s act enabled the infantry to overcome a numerically superior enemy force and complete the assigned mission. Sergeant Pyle’s heroism and selfless devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
