The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Master Sergeant Russell H. Piatt (ASN: RA-16204385), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 30 November 1950, near Majon-ni, Korea, Master Sergeant Piatt led a patrol in search for a parachute message which had landed away from its intended area. After a considerable canvas, the parachute was discovered in a heavily mined field. Master Sergeant Piatt, realizing the danger involved in this new situation, ordered the men in his patrol to remain in a safe position while he courageously began the tedious task of crossing the field to retrieve the parachute. The field was covered with a mass of trip wires. As Master Sergeant Piatt proceeded across the field, he tripped a wire, releasing an anti-personnel mine which failed to detonate. Nevertheless, he continued until he had successfully reached his objective. Master Sergeant Piatt’s heroic action reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
