The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Albert Lloyd Pence, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action at Kwajalein Island, on 4 February 1944. When his Infantry Company reached the north end of Kwajalein Island, the only remaining hostile positions were three huge bunkers covering dual-purpose gun emplacements which had survived all previous attempts to reduce them by bombing and shelling. Enemy riflemen were using them as cover in their last stand. Seven casualties already had been caused by the enemy fire. Taking a large satchel charge, Captain Pence climbed to the top of the bunker, placed it on the entrance to the structure, and detonated it. In effect, this enabled the others to bring more explosives forward and ultimately to reduce the fortifications. He then proceeded to coordinate further mopping up work with the company on his right. While so engaged he was severely wounded in the chest. Captain Pence’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
