The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Uliss C. Pace (ASN: RA-14276162), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 March 1953 in the vicinity of Um-dong, North Korea. On the night of 1 March 1953, the enemy launched a company sized attack upon the positions of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment. At the start of the savage enemy attack the platoon leader of Sergeant Pace’s platoon was mortally wounded and the responsibilities and operation of the platoon rested upon his shoulders. Upon the assumption of command, he immediately set out to check the positions of his men, giving each a few moments of his time and rendering words of encouragement and reassurance. After insuring the defense of the line, Sergeant Pace braved intense mortar, artillery and small arms fire to go out in front of the Main Line of Resistance to check on the platoon outpost that had been almost forgotten during the heated conflict. Upon his arrival at the outpost, he observed his men engaging approximately four of the enemy in a fire fight. Completely disregarding his personal safety, Sergeant Pace charged the enemy, killing the entire group with effective rifle fire. Then, finding one member of the friendly outpost wounded and in need of immediate aid, he made a makeshift bandage and brace and carrying the wounded man, proceeded to guide the men back to friendly lines. The outstanding actions of Sergeant Pace contributed greatly to the successful defense of the positions and undoubtedly saved the lives of two comrades. The gallantry and selfless devotion to duty exhibited by Sergeant Pace reflect great credit on himself and the military service.
