Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 113 (December 21, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John Nieminski (ASN: RA-11168956), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 22 September 1950 in the vicinity of Chinmok-Tong, Korea. On this date his platoon led the assault on Hill 289. As they advanced, they were soon pinned down by intense enemy machine gun fire, which threatened to hold up the advance of the attack. Realizing that unless something was done immediately the momentum of the attack would vanish, Private Nieminski, with total disregard for his own safety, charged the enemy machine gun nest. He continued his charge in the face of the murderous hail of enemy fire until he was wounded in the stomach. Painfully wounded as he was, and lying in an exposed position, he continued to urge his comrades to continue the attack. The remainder of the company were so inspired by his actions that they continued on to complete their mission. The intrepid gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Private Nieminski on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
