Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 124 (March 4, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Donald H. Morken (ASN: NG-27739439), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 January 1952 in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea. On that date a patrol, of which Sergeant Morken was a member, made a very close contact with an enemy force. When the patrol leader attempted to fire upon the foe, his rifle jammed, rendering it useless, thus leaving him unarmed and exposed to the enemy. Realizing the precarious situation of his leader and with complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Morken exposed himself to the heavy hostile grenade and small arms fire in an effort to offer covering fire for the exposed officer. His deadly fire inflicted several casualties upon the enemy, forcing the remainder to seek cover and enabling the patrol leader to reach safety. His immediate action and selfless devotion to duty undoubtedly saved the life of the officer and were an inspiration to all who observed him. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Morken is in accordance with the esteemed traditions of the military service.
