The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William D. Molberg (ASN: US-55228656), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 21 May and during the early morning hours of 22 May 1953, a raiding party of Company B had the mission of engaging and destroying the enemy in the vicinity of Pung-Myon, Korea. When the friendly elements were nearing their objective, they were suddenly attacked by a numerically superior hostile force. As an intense fire fight ensued, several casualties were inflicted upon the friendly forces. Observing this, Private Molberg, a medical aidman attached to the company, left his covered position and moved about the fire swept area, administering aid and consoling his wounded comrades. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he frequently exposed himself to severe hostile fore to move a wounded man to a covered position where he could be treated. He remained with the wounded and refused to leave the battlefield until the last wounded man had been evacuated. Private Molberg’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
