The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Guy Everett Mitchell (ASN: 0-57446), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. First Lieutenant Mitchell distinguished himself by courageous action near Chonui, Korea, on 10 July 1950. Voluntarily joining two rifle companies in their attack against an enemy force estimated at regimental strength, he moved forward, through intense artillery, mortar and small arms fire, in order to maintain vital communications. His actions, without regard for his own safety, on a mission of his own choice, was an inspiration to those who fought about him and aided materially in the success of the attack. Lieutenant Mitchell’s gallant example reflects the greatest credit on himself and the U.S. Infantry.
