Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 24 (January 30, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clarence E. Millikin (ASN: RA-57511432), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 4 February 1952, Private Millikin was serving as a radio operator with the forward observer section of a Mortar Platoon attached to an Infantry unit occupying positions on outpost “Kelly” near Kojanna-ri, Korea. The unit was attacked by an estimated battalion of hostile forces. Unable to properly operate his radio from within his bunker, Private Millikin left his position and established communications with his platoon, requesting fire support to repulse the attack. When his unit was forced to withdraw, he remained in his position directing mortar fire until his radio was destroyed by hostile shell fragments. He then hurled grenades upon the advancing foe until he was wounded. Private Millikin’s gallantry was responsible for the enemy suffering casualties and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
