Action Date:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Drew Robert Meyerowich, United States Army, for gallantry in action against hostile enemy forces while serving as Commanding Officer of Company A, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, in action on 3 – 4 October 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia. Captain Meyerowich led his company on a mission to rescue 90 Rangers who were pinned down by withering cross fire deep within enemy-held territory. For over eight hours his company was under constant intense enemy fire. He personally led at the point of attack in clearing obstacles, directing fires, and kept the attack moving, breaking through to the Rangers. Captain Meyerowich then directed the evacuation of over 20 Untied States casualties, called in close air support from attack helicopters, and continually moved from position to position to check his men while under small arms, rocket propelled grenade, and mortar fire. He then led the fight back to friendly positions, dangerously exposing himself to enemy fire to keep the company moving. Captain Meyerowich’s forceful leadership at the point of attack under intense enemy fire reflect great credit on hm and the United States Army.
