Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 210 (June 22, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward E. Meyer (ASN: 0-1330577), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 10 May 1951, in the vicinity of Chunchon, Korea. Lieutenant Meyer was with a company-sized combat patrol in the capacity of Air Liaison Officer. When the patrol reached Hill 699 it was subjected to intense enemy fire from a well concealed position and was forced to withdraw. Lieutenant Meyer quickly realized the necessity of an air strike in order to dislodge the enemy from his positions. As the company withdrew to a more tenable position, Lieutenant Meyer remained behind so he could better observe the enemy and accurately direct air strikes. During the entire operation he remained exposed to the enemy fire while directing air strikes with maximum effectiveness. Through his courageous performance of duty numerous casualties were inflicted upon the enemy and the company was able to resume the advance and accomplish its mission. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Meyer reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
