The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Donald F. Meyer (ASN: US-52000512), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 April 1951, during an engagement with the enemy near Taejon-ni, Korea, Private Meyer saw a comrade in a forward position fall wounded by the intense hostile fire and unhesitatingly crawled toward the emplacement to rescue the stricken soldier. He had just reached the foxhole when he noticed five enemy soldiers approaching from a ridge to the rear. Quickly moving on the offensive, Private Meyer charged and killed all five with the lethal fire of his carbine. He then returned to the wounded man, but before he could proceed to rescue him, he was attacked again by eight more hostile soldiers. Once more rising in the assault, Private Meyer poured a withering concentration of rifle fire into this enemy group, calmly reloading despite the acute danger, until he had slain them all. Returning then to his injured comrade, he lifted and carried him across 200 yards of open hazardous terrain to safety. His original voluntary mission thus successfully accomplished, Private Meyer made his way back to his former position only to find it surrounded by the enemy. Flattening himself on the ground, he opened fire with his carbine and hand grenades, effectively driving off the foe and relieving the beleaguered emplacement. Private Meyer’s consummate courage and steadfast gallantry reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
