Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 85 (November 3, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John L. Mellinger (ASN: RA-16051453), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 5 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changyong, Korea. On the morning of this date he was in charge of clearing an enemy mine field in the regimental line of advance which was delaying the supporting tanks. As the mine field was under the observation of enemy mortar crews and the direct fire of a self-propelled gun, all attempts to sweep and probe for the mines were subjected to intense self-propelled gun and mortar fire. Sergeant Mellinger, with no thought for his own safety, maintained his party’s organization, and personally led the probing and sweeping activities. He then remained in an exposed position and directed a demolition party in placing charges to blow up the field. His fearless and courageous actions were an inspiration to all of his men and instilled in them the desire to complete their mission. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Mellinger on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the military service.
