Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 277 (July 13, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) John T. McMahon (ASN: 0-1823037), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 58th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, while withdrawing to new defensive positions, the 58th Armored Field Artillery Battalion halted on the main supply route in the vicinity of Chi-Dong, Korea. Suddenly the column was subjected to intense machine gun, small arms, and automatic weapons fire from well-concealed enemy positions. Becoming momentarily confused, the friendly troops sought cover behind the armored vehicles. Immediately realizing that this action endangered the safety of the entire column, Captain McMahon unhesitatingly left his position at the rear and drove his vehicle the length of the column, stopping at individual vehicles to point out targets and direct return fire. Inspired by Captain McMahon’s fearless leadership, the friendly troops inflicted numerous casualties upon the enemy, enabling the unit to withdraw without the loss of a single vehicle. Captain McMahon’s gallant actions reflects great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
