The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major General Horace Logan McBride (ASN: 0-4430), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding General of the 80th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 September 1944, in France. On this date troops of his command, the 80th Infantry Division, were disposed along the east bank of the Moselle River. While advancing through high wooded ground in the Bois de Rumont, they encountered fierce enemy resistance characterized by particularly heavy automatic weapons and artillery fire which halted their attack. Disregarding continuous tree bursts, and with little regard for his own personal safety, Major General McBride went forward to his troops and his commanders, personally directing their movement and deployment. Inspired by his fearless example, his troops stabilized their positions and returned to the attack with such determination that enemy resistance was shattered and the objective seized. The courage and gallant leadership of Major General McBride are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
