Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 381 (July 31, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Nicholas F. Manno (ASN: ER-13310909), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. On that date he was a member of an infantry company which was forced to withdraw under heavy enemy pressure, leaving behind a number of friendly soldiers who were carrying the wounded. As the enemy advanced toward these troops, Corporal Manno, with complete disregard for his personal safety, exposed himself to automatic weapons and heavy small arms fire to set up a machine gun emplacement from which he delivered accurate and effective fire on the advancing enemy. He remained in his position, hurling hand grenades even when the enemy came within close range, until all friendly troops had been extricated. The courageous action and gallant conduct displayed by Corporal Manno on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
