The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles R. McCallum (ASN: US-56079358), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 October 1951 in the vicinity of Imok-Chong, Korea. On this date Company L had the mission of securing a strategic hill defended by the enemy in well fortified emplacements. As the unit advanced in the attack, Private McCallum, an automatic rifleman, observed several hostile bunkers on an opposite ridge. Realizing that these emplacements were a hazard to his company, he advanced over the fire-swept area and set up his weapon in the vicinity of the enemy bunkers. From this point he employed a heavy concentration of fire into the emplacements, successfully destroying them and inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. On his way to rejoin his unit Private McCallum captured several enemy soldiers who later gave important information pertaining to a planned hostile surprise attack. Through his courageous actions the enemy suffered heavy casualties and the lives of many of his comrades were saved. The gallantry in action displayed by Private McCallum on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
