The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Nelson H. Lee (ASN: ER-31318050), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 February 1951 in the vicinity of Sengsok, Korea. Company B had launched an assault against enemy positions on Hill 442. The attack was spearheaded by Sergeant Lee who, firing an automatic rifle with devastating effect, charged directly into the intense enemy fire and almost single-handedly fought his way to the crest of the hill. His platoon, encouraged and inspired by his audacity, attacked with such ferocity that the objective was seized and numerous casualties were inflicted upon the enemy. In the last phases of the engagement Sergeant Lee was wounded by machine gun fire, but, with loyal devotion to his comrades, assisted in helping other wounded soldiers until, weakened by loss of blood, he was evacuated. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Lee reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
