Walter Kraus was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Engineer Reserves in 1917, and was commissioned in the Regular Army as a Coast Artillery second lieutenant in 1917. He graduated from the Air Service Observation School in 1922, and served during World War II with the Army Air Forces, retiring in 1946 as a Major General.
