The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class [then Private] Rudolph Samuel Knotts (ASN: RA-13233007), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 August 1950, the enemy attacked outpost positions some 2300 yards from the company area near Haman, Korea. Private First Class Knotts, firing his automatic rifle, covered the withdrawal of the squad and started to withdraw himself when he was wounded by the intense hostile fire. Despite his severe wounds he continued firing, inflicting heavy casualties on the large hostile force. Although he was again wounded, he continued his vigorous action until, 75 yards from the company perimeter, he was killed. Private First Class Knotts’ gallant devotion to his comrades and determined fighting spirit are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
