The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Virgle D. Knight (ASN: 0-1684952), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, near Taejon-ni, Korea, as Lieutenant Knight’s company was occupying defensive positions, it was suddenly attacked by a numerically superior enemy force and the unit received an order to withdraw. Lieutenant Knight, fearlessly remaining and exposing himself to the intense enemy fire, hurled over fifteen hand grenades and fired his carbine into the ranks of the charging foe, delaying the enemy advance and allowing his unit sufficient time to safely withdraw. Although slightly wounded he continued firing his weapon and upon exhausting the supply of ammunition, swung the carbine in the fashion of a club and battered his way back to his men. The outstanding gallantry, courage and aggressiveness displayed by Lieutenant Knight reflects great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
