The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Joseph A. Kenney (ASN: RA-13424230), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 and 27 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date Private Kenney was a member of the 23rd Infantry Regiment “Raider Platoon” that had the assigned mission of making contact with the enemy behind hostile lines, attacking their positions and securing a prisoner. As the friendly unit neared its objective, they were suddenly subjected to a withering hail of enemy grenade, automatic weapons and small arms fire. Undaunted by the fury of the enemy fire and with complete disregard for personal safety, Private Kenney stormed up the hill, launching a one man assault against an enemy emplacement, pouring a hail of rifle fire and throwing grenades, inflicting many casualties upon the hostile forces and disabling their position. When the friendly unit was ordered to withdraw, he aided in evacuating the wounded until wounded himself. At this point, he voluntarily stayed behind with an automatic rifleman to assist in giving covering fire until his platoon reached the safety of friendly lines. The courageous conduct and consummate devotion to duty displayed by Private Kenney reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
