The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Donald F. Kenna (ASN: US-56052960), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 September 1951, Company C and Company A were heavily engaged with the enemy for the control of two hills, near Kalma-dong, Korea, with a draw between the two summits subjected to severe hostile mortar fire. During the height of the engagement, a dazed soldier from Company A reached C Company’s command post and reported that his carrying party of civilian laborers, terrified by the bursting mortar rounds, had abandoned two seriously wounded soldiers and left them lying helpless in the draw. Private Kenna, who was nearby, heard the soldier’s report and immediately volunteered to lead eight of the company’s native workers into the extremely hazardous area and bring the stricken men to safety. Due to the dust and smoke pervading the vicinity, the small band disappeared from observation and, for a time, the success of its mission became a matter of conjecture. Shortly, however, the first litter team emerged into view from the blasted area and, soon after it, the second carrying party appeared followed by Private Kenna, who was encouraging and urging the frightened laborers to complete the perilous mission. Private Kenna’s voluntary gallantry and resolute leadership were primary factors in successfully accomplishing this dangerous task and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
