The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Anthony S. Kapfensteiner (ASN: RA-17307733), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action during the period 21 August to 2 September 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. During this period, friendly units were assaulting a strongly fortified enemy-held hill. Private Kapfensteiner, a platoon runner, disregarding the intense enemy fire, delivered vital messages to the commanding officer and back to the platoon sergeant. Later, when assigned the mission of leading a squad in an attack on enemy positions, Private Kapfensteiner, through his dauntless leadership, enabled his unit to overrun hostile positions and secure its objective. While moving about his comrades giving words of encouragement and checking their conditions, Private Kapfensteiner was fatally wounded by an enemy mortar round. The gallantry in action and self-sacrificing devotion to duty displayed by Private Kapfensteiner on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
