Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 456 (October 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) David F. Kanyer (ASN: 0-1326849), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 May 1951, in the vicinity of Habae-Jae, Korea, Lieutenant Kanyer’s platoon was given the mission of securing the dominating terrain between Hills 890 and 925 defended by a well-entrenched and determined enemy. Advancing to within approximately 50 yards of the objective, the platoon was caught in a vicious crossfire forcing it to fall back and seek cover. Heedless of the intense small arms and grenade fire, Lieutenant Kanyer, repeatedly exposing himself, reorganized his platoon and again led an assault upon the enemy, personally killing several of the foe in a grenade duel. Receiving orders to withdraw, he supervised the evacuation of the wounded and, observing a stricken soldier unable to displace, dashed through a hail of fire to his aid and assisted him to safety. On the morning of 24 May 1951, Lieutenant Kanyer again initiated a vigorous assault upon the objective and succeeded in routing the enemy from his positions. The superb gallantry and courageous leadership displayed by Lieutenant Kanyer reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
