The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Edwin Mortimer Joseph (ASN: 0-28522), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. Captain Joseph, while in a position he knew to be cut off by the enemy stayed in position firing many artillery missions, and aided his forward observers in their own missions. Though under extremely heavy small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire, Captain Joseph went in search of his men to pass on the order to withdraw. Not finding them in their previous location he assisted in removing the wounded from the area at which time he was wounded. His vehicles were immediately brought under machine gunfire and he was forced to abandon them, thus halting his fire missions. At this point, he brought his men through the enemy lines and safely into friendly areas. The inspiring leadership and gallantry in action displayed by Captain Joseph reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
