The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Watt Jones, Jr. (ASN: RA-13317895), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 7 January 1951 in the vicinity of Wonju, Korea. On the night of that date enemy units had succeeded in infiltrating through the front line rifle companies under cover of darkness and were advancing toward the battalion command post. Sergeant Jones was given the mission of establishing a roadblock with his platoon. He led his platoon in the darkness over an unfamiliar road, which was covered by enemy fire, and skillfully deployed his men at the designated position. Shortly thereafter, the enemy discovered the roadblock and subjected the platoon to heavy small arms and grenade fire. Sergeant Jones, displaying great coolness and determination, ordered his men to hold their fire until such time as they could see the enemy by the light of flares and burning buildings. He and his men withheld their fire until a flare disclosed a group of enemy attempting to outflank the roadblock. He then directed the fire of his men with such effect that five of the enemy were killed and the remainder dispersed. He held his position at the roadblock until he was ordered to withdraw. Throughout the action his calm and fearless leadership and his complete disregard for personal safety were a source of great inspiration to his comrades and were greatly instrumental to the success of his unit in preventing the enemy from infiltrating further to the rear. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Sergeant Jones reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
