The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert V. Jones (ASN: RA-15429880), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 September 1951, near Chorwon, Korea, during E Company’s attack on Hill 487, the Second Platoon, the assaulting element of the company, having advanced through and 40 yards beyond a pinned down Republic of Korea platoon, was halted by the heavy volume of enemy fire. Corporal Jones, aware of the gravity of remaining suspended under the withering fire, voluntarily advanced upon a bunker, heedless of the concentrated effort by the enemy to stop him. Reaching the emplacement, he hurled hand grenades into the bunker and then entered, killing three of the foe with bursts from his automatic rifle. Corporal Jones then moved to an exposed position and, drawing the enemy fire upon himself, enabled his unit to set up a base of fire for the final successful assault. The aggressive gallantry and superb courage displayed by Corporal Jones reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
