The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Lincoln Griffin Jones (ASN: 0-64119), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy from 31 July 1952 to 1 August 1952, in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. At that time Lieutenant Jones was in command of an Infantry platoon whose mission was to attack the crest of Hill 266, better known as “Old Baldy”. As the platoon moved forward, the enemy launched a devastating barrage of artillery and mortar fire which pinned them down. Lieutenant Jones, with complete disregard for personal safety, voluntarily moved out into the fire-swept area to assume better command of his unit. Charging forward, he unleashed a vicious attack upon the hostile force, inflicting numerous casualties and so inspiring his men that they immediately followed his courageous example. Even though wounded when the savage foe made a counterattack, he courageously moved from man to man shouting instructions and praise until the attack was repelled. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Jones reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
