The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to John Arthur Olson, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as a Forward Air Controller Pilot with the 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron, in action in Southeast Asia on 26 June 1967. On that date, Captain Olson directed a large scale effort in support of friendly ground forces engaged in the defense of their beleaguered outpost. With unwavering calmness and courage, Captain Olson accurately marked and directed several aircraft against numerous troop concentrations, truck parks, and storage areas _ despite adverse weather conditions and intense ground fire which damaged his aircraft. At conclusion of the effort, numerous casualties had been inflicted upon the hostile forces and heavy damage had been caused to their storage areas and facilities in the successful defense of the outpost. Captain Olson’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Air Force.
