Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 127 (May 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Maryland Hoover (ASN: RA-16292747), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Detachment, 64th Heavy Tank Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 5 and 6 February 1951, near Suwon, Korea, Corporal Hoover was serving as an aid man with Company A of the 64th Heavy Tank Battalion which was participating in a fire fight with an enemy force. Corporal Hoover repeatedly exposed himself to heavy enemy fire in order to rescue, render first aid, and evacuate the wounded personnel. On one occasion when he had his jeep overloaded with patients, Corporal Hoover placed one of the patients on the hood of the jeep and shielded the patient from small arms fire with his own body. Corporal Hoover’s gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
