Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 20 (January 25, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Saint J. Hicks (ASN: RA-13343729), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 November 1950 in the vicinity of Sinjang, Korea. On that date his unit’s defensive positions along the Chongchon River was subjected to a fierce attack by overwhelmingly superior enemy forces. Private Hicks, machine gunner, inflicted severe casualties upon the enemy, single-handedly delaying and dispersing the repeated attacks. When his platoon was forced to withdraw he voluntarily remained in position and, with complete indifference for his personal safety, covered their successful withdrawal. His intrepidity under enemy fire was instrumental in preventing the enemy from advancing and undoubtedly prevented serious casualties to his comrades. The gallantry displayed by Private Hicks on this occasion reflects the highest credit upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
