The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Clarence G. Heath (ASN: 0-1333072), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 March 1951, Company A launched its assault against Hill 337, near Uijongbu, Korea. The plan of attack called for two platoons abreast to lead the drive and the Third Platoon, under Lieutenant Heath’s command, was one of the two units initiating the attack. As the platoon moved across the open rice paddies toward the base of the hill, the enemy opened fire with machine guns and mortars and Lieutenant Heath ordered his men to take cover, which they did, thus temporarily halting their advance. Although the entire company sporadically returned the enemy fire, the troops’ position rendered it highly unlikely that, so situated, they could remove the hazardous obstacles blocking their approach to the objective. Aware of this, Lieutenant Heath gathered together as many hand grenades as he could carry and when he had collected a sufficient amount he started toward the hostile emplacements. The enemy, noticing his approach, started throwing hand grenades at him, but, hitting the ground, Lieutenant Heath escaped the danger of the exploding missiles. He then fearlessly charged the enemy position hurling grenades and blasting it out of existence. Seeing this, the Third and First Platoons immediately rose on the offensive and, vigorously attacking the hill, eliminated all enemy resistance. As these units charged, a bursting enemy grenade wounded Lieutenant Heath in the leg, but remaining with his troops, he refused evacuation until the objective had been secured. Lieutenant Heath’s gallant leadership and militant courage reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
