The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Cecil W. Hart (ASN: RA-6959433), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, gallantry in action against the enemy on 23 December 1951 in the vicinity of Kumgong-ni, Korea. On this date he was a platoon leader in a combat patrol whose mission was to drive the enemy from his well-entrenched and concealed positions on an outpost rising steeply out of the surrounding rice paddies. When his platoon approached the bunker positions, it was subjected to intense hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire and was temporarily halted. Without hesitation, Lieutenant Hart advanced to an exposed position where he was able to direct fire upon the enemy emplacement which had stalled the progress of his platoon. Then with complete disregard for his personal safety, he led his men in a fierce assault against the enemy, neutralizing many bunkers and inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. Through his outstanding leadership the mission was successfully completed with a minimum of friendly casualties. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Hart on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
