    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Jack D. Harris (ASN: US-54066506), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Wondang-ni, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Harris, an assistant squad leader, was advancing up an enemy held hill when his squad encountered an intense barrage of enemy fire. Completely disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Harris picked up an automatic rifle and charged the enemy emplacement. Evading the hostile fire, he stormed the position, silencing the enemy weapon and killing five enemy soldiers. As a result of Sergeant Harris’ courageous and selfless action, the squad renewed its advance and successfully completed its mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Harris is in keeping with the esteemed traditions of the military service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Jack D. Harris (ASN: US-54066506), United States Army, for heroic achievement as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 10 March 1952 in the vicinity of Songnae-Dong, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Harris was part of an assault squad assigned the mission of attacking an enemy held hill to gain information on hostile troop conditions. As the squad neared the enemy positions they encountered heavy fire. Sergeant Harris, although wounded by the deadly fire, continued to advance until ordered to withdraw. As the squad withdrew, Sergeant Harris, disregarding his own wound, directed the men safely through the hail of fire without the loss of a single man. The leadership and heroism in action displayed by Sergeant Harris reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
