Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 736 (November 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Clemmons C. Harper (ASN: US-52057516), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 October 1951 in the vicinity of Tondul, Korea. On this date while attacking vital enemy positions, Company E encountered intense hostile mortar fire. By skillfully maneuvering his platoon, Sergeant Harper evaded the deadly concentration of enemy fire. Nearing the objective, the platoon was pinned down by heavy machine gun fire from a lone hostile emplacement. Sergeant Harper, braving the enemy fire, cautiously worked himself toward the hostile position. When within throwing range, he rose in full view of the enemy and threw his grenades into the emplacement, inflicting numerous enemy casualties and silencing the weapon. Calling the remainder of his men forward, he directed them in neutralizing several other bunkers. Through his courageous and capable leadership the mission was successfully accomplished. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Harper on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
