Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 79 (April 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Edward Eugene Harber (ASN: RA-17252809), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On that date he was a member of a rifle platoon which, mounted on tanks, had the mission of reducing an enemy roadblock. As the platoon advanced, it was brought under heavy grazing fire from a hostile machine gun. Heedless of the intense enemy fire, Private Harber leaped fearlessly from his tank and dashed forward to locate the enemy emplacement. When he had found the enemy position he returned to the tank and directed the tank fire upon the weapon, destroying it. When his platoon received small arms fire delivered from an adjacent field by enemy who had been hidden in hay stacks, he launched a single-handed assault, routing and killing several of the enemy before he was struck by hostile fire and fell mortally wounded. The gallantry displayed by Private Harber reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
